Getting Motivated to Lose Weight

Getting motivated to lose weight isn’t always easy, and even when we are, it often wears off in a short time causing us to abandon the diet and exercise regime that we were so enthusiastic about a few days before. We’ve all done it; set our targets, signed up to the gym then thought, “This is too hard, there’s no way I’ll ever lose all this weight.”

When that moment comes, or when we’re tempted by the cookie jar at midnight, it’s not always easy to see why we were so enthused to begin with but there are ways to make sure you don’t get discouraged and lose interest in losing weight.

1. Make sure that you don’t have any ‘problem’ foods in the house. Only have foods that are low in fat, low in calories and aren’t going to tempt you to over indulge. Try to only buy foods that you make from scratch rather than processed and prepackaged foods which are likely to be high in the ‘danger’ fats and calories.

2. Make sure that you set a number of goals when you’re losing weight. Instead of thinking ‘I need to lose 100 pounds’ think, ‘My first goal is to lose 10 pounds in x number of weeks’. If you were building a house, you’d first plan the foundations then add the bricks, then the roof… weight loss is no different. It has to be planned stage by stage or it will become overwhelming and you’ll become discouraged.

3. A good way of staying motivated is to promise to buy yourself an item of clothing that you will fit into when you achieve each goal. On average, we drop a dress size for every 12 – 13 pounds lost, so when you achieve that goal, buy yourself something in the new size. But remember not to buy something very expensive because you’ll be losing more weight yet!

4. Enjoy your life as it is and allow for a little treat now and again. This doesn’t have to be food; it can be a nice long bath or a day out but it could also be a meal in a nice restaurant. You can still eat healthily while enjoying your life so don’t become depressed by what you can’t have – enjoy what you can have!
